Newport Museum and Art Gallery is producing the digital archive chartistnewport to record the heritage of Chartism and public art in Newport and South Wales. We commence with The Newport Chartist Mural Documentation Project, which is produced by Newport Museum and Art Gallery in partnership with Modus and Public Art Wales.

Commencing with documentation of the Newport Chartist Mural, we move on to explore the wider context of public art in Newport in which the popular celebration of Chartism is to the fore, and then further afield to look at the wider landscape of Chartism and its commemorative landmarks in Monmouthshire and South Wales as a whole, and finally a consideration of the historical interpretation of Chartism.
Our main art historical aim is to document the public commemoration of Chartism in public art forms such as public statues, memorials and plaques. It is hoped that this documentation of cultural artefacts may lead the enquirer on to further engagement with the history of Chartism.
